You are cordially invited to Glyco XXIII, the 23rd biannual congress of the International Glycoconjugate Organization (IGO). Life on our planet is based on glycoconjugates and glycans are essential elements in nearly all biological processes. However, due to their structural complexity and intricate biological roles, glycans are still ignored by the majority of “mainstream” science; therefore the knowledge about glycans is lagging significantly behind the knowledge about DNA and proteins.
The situation is changing and with the progress in methods and technologies to synthesize, analyze and manipulate glycans, glycoscience is reaching out to other disciplines and provides them with tools to deepen our understanding of the world around us.
At Glyco XXIII we will try to emphasize the progress in these “functional” areas of glycoscience, but in addition to “classical sessions”, we will include a number of sessions and speakers focused on the role of glycans in different diseases and cellular processes. In addition to the already traditional guest session of the Society for Glycobiology, this conference will also host a guest session of the Asian Community for Glycoscience and Glycobiotechnology. We will also continue the good tradition of organizing the Young Glycoscientists’ Symposium, which will be intertwined with the main conference. As an experiment, we will introduce a pre-symposium training course “Introduction to Glycoscience” with introductory lectures by leading experts in the field. We hope that these lectures will help our young colleagues, but also experienced researchers from other disciplines, to better understand the dynamic and rapidly evolving field of glycoscience.
The congress venue will be the beautiful Le MeridienLav hotel in Split, which has got numerous awards, including the award for the best congress hotel in Europe. Located in Podstrana, eight kilometers south of Split, Le MeridienLav has a beautiful setting featuring 800 meters of beach frontage, gardens landscaped by award-winning designer Jim Nicolay, and fantastic sea views overlooking the city and the surrounding islands. The hotel includes Casino and the adjoining nightclub, the Diocletian Spa and Wellness centre, as well as recreational venues such as Tennis Academy, with four championship courts, and the Water Sports Centre, which offers scuba diving, waterskiing, sailing, rock climbing and abseiling.
To enable efficient networking and ensure all other benefits of a small focused conference we will limit the number of participants to 700, so please be sure to register early to reserve your place on this great event.
